It’s come to that time again where we get to test you in our UK sports quiz!

Like the 99% of you reading this quiz, I am an absolute sports fanatic. If there’s sports on TV, even if it’s the Indoor World Bowl’s Championship, I’ll watch it.

One of my favourite times of the year is hunkering down in a cosy pub cheering England on in the Six Nations. Cold pint of ale, good friends all cheering at the TV – that’s basically my perfect Saturday. I really miss those days at the moment.

Usually, a group of us will get to the pub early, get a round in, and start asking each other a few sports quiz questions to get us in the mood before the game kicks off. What can I say, I hang out with sports nerds. I am not ashamed to admit that.

Right, it’s time for the answers. I really hope you got more than 50%! Let’s see how you did.

UK Sports Quiz: Questions and Answers

1. Who is England’s most capped football player? It’s Peter Shilton with a record of 125 caps! Wayne Rooney is second with 120 caps.

2. When was the Calcutta Cup first played between England and Scotland? 1871. The historic rugby fixture has since been held a total of 136 times, with England winning on 75 occasions and Scotland 43 times with 19 draws.

3. How many grand slams has Andy Murray won? 3. The US Open in 2012, Wimbledon in 2013, and Wimbledon again in 2016.

4. What event did Jessica Ennis-Hill win gold at the London 2012 Olympics? On Super Saturday, Jessica Ennis won the heptathlon. What a day that was!

5. Who is Britain’s most decorated Olympian? That is Bradley Wiggins with 8 Olympic medals (just ahead of Sir Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny). Jason Kenny is expected to become the most decorated Olympian at the Tokyo Olympics if they happen this year.

6. Time for a cricket question now. Who is England’s all-time top run scorer? Alistair Cook with a whooping 12,472 runs. Graham Gooch in second place has 8,900 runs, nearly 3,500 fewer runs.

7. While we’re on cricket, who is England’s all-time top wicket taker? Another all-time cricketing legend, it’s James (Jimmy) Anderson with 606 wickets. He is the only fast bowler with over 600 test wickets. I would’ve also accepted the Burnley Express (his nickname).

8. Who was the first person to run under the four-minute mile? That was Sir Roger Bannister at Oxford in 1954. At the time, it was one of the hardest running records to break.

9. How many players make up the Ryder Cup? Each team has 12 players to choose from for a total of 28 games to be played.

10. Where is the World Darts Championship famously held every year? The Alexandra Palace in London, or the Ally Pally as it’s fondly known.

11. Who is the Premier League’s all-time top scorer? Shearerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Alan Shearer with an incredible 260 goals. The guy was a goal machine!

12. Who is Wales’s most capped rugby player? Easy one this. It’s Alun Wyn Jones with 143 caps. He’s actually the most capped player in the world with no sign of stopping any time soon!

13. What is known colloquially as ‘the Bible of Cricket’? The Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. This dates back to 1864 and is still in print today. You can see what it’s like here.

14. Which England footballer was famously never given a yellow card? That’s Mr Nice Guy, Gary Lineker.

15. How many world titles has Phil ‘the Power’ Talyor won in darts? 16 world titles over two decades of dominance. Pure class.

16. Who won a gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics in the skeleton bobsleigh? That was Amy Williams if you remember her! She broke the stereotype that Brits were rubbish at winter sports. Hero.

17. Who is the only player to have scored in the Premier League, Championship, League 1, League 2, Conference, FA Cup, League Cup, Football League Trophy, FA Trophy, Champions League, Europa League, Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup? I think this is the hardest UK sports trivia question I could find. The answer is Gary Hooper. Anyone get that one?

18. What was the final score when England beat Australia in the rugby world cup final in 2003? One of my favourite days of my life. England won in extra time with the final score of 20-17. Such a nail biter!

19. Another one on golf. Which British golfer has won the most majors in their career? This was quite hard, but it’s Sir Nick Faldo who won 6 majors – 3 at the Masters and 3 at the Open. He doesn’t even make it into the top 10 of most career majors which is mad!

20. In what year were the Commonwealth Games first held? The first Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada, where 11 countries sent 400 athletes to take part in six sports and 59 events.

23. Which WWE superstar did Tyson Fury wrestle in 2019? That was Braun Strowman. For a guy who has done some really weird things in his career, this one is right up there.

25. Who are the currently the reigning champions of Rugby League in England? St Helens won the 2020 Grand Final.

26. Who was the first Brit to win the Tour de France? Again, that was Bradley Wiggins at the 2012 Tour de France. Amazingly, it was the 100th edition of the race and only the first British winner. Chris Froome has won it 4 times since then, and Geraint Thomas once, showing a period of British dominance in the sport.

27. The Grand National, held at Aintree, is raced over what distance? 4 miles and 2½ furlongs. This equates to 34.5 furlongs if you put that.

28. Who is the current head coach of the Scotland rugby team? That’s Gregor Townsend.

29. Who has won the most Sport’s Personality of the Year Awards? Ironically, it’s Andy Murray who has won it 3 times. On one occasion, he joking said it wasn’t bad for someone with arguably no personality!

30. Great Britain has produced 10 drivers who have won the F1 World Championship – name them 5 of these (1 point for each) In order, any of these will get you a point – Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Damon Hill, Nigel Mansel, James Hunt, Sit Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Mike Hawthorn
